Active in the jewelry industry since 2016, Elliot studied at The Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad and began as a Staff Gemologist for Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers. Elliot apprenticed under Thom Underwood and began performing appraisals for San Diego Gemological Laboratory upon Thom’s retirement.

Founder of San Diego Gemological Laboratory
Thom Underwood GG, FGA, ASA, CSM, Master Gemologist Appraiser founded San Diego Gemological Laboratory in 1978 offering the first ‘by appointment’ jewelry appraisal services in San Diego. Active in the jewelry industry since the mid 1970’s, Thom began as a goldsmith and jewelry manufacturer.
Starting in 1981 Thom transitioned his manufacturing company into a fine jewelry store, Currie & Underwood, situated in the Mission Hills community of San Diego. In 1991 Thom sold his interest in Currie & Underwood and turned his focus on providing a full spectrum of independent jewelry appraisal services including insurance, estate/trust, as well as expert witness services.
In 2022 Thom passed San Diego Gemological Laboratory on to the capable care of the Elliot Grunwald, G.G.
